The world of AI beyond content with Dr Philippa Hardman and Donald H Taylor

On 27 June 2024, our LT Webinar series continued with an edition all about artificial intelligence and its true impact on learning and development. The conversation was led by Dr Philippa Hardman and Donald H Taylor, who discussed their own insights and learnings from others, to share the world of AI beyond content creation.

Dr Philippa Hardman is Creator and Founder of DOMS™️, and in discussion with Learning Technologies Conference Chair Donald H Taylor, they explored the world of AI beyond content. Dr Hardman has spent the last 20+ years researching and experimenting with methods to help connect what we know about how humans learn with how we design learning experiences. As a LinkedIn Top Voice and an expert in the world of artificial intelligence, Philippa is on a mission to help the world design better learning experiences powered by AI.

What are the most common uses of AI?

The session kicked off with an important question to the audience: 'How are you currently using AI in L&D?' The audience responded with a wide range of answers, but the most common by far were either for content creation, or not at all. This led perfectly into the session, as the aim of this webinar was to go beyond the world of content in terms of AI — and actively investigate and share the other many ways it's helping organisations with their L&D strategy.

Aside from content generation, Philippa shared the other popular ways organisations are starting to use AI. For example, one is to use these tools as a new way to understand learners and design experiences that spark genuine drive. This way, designers can unlock further learner engagement and long-term impact. Another way AI can boost the work of L&D professionals is developing more of a learning experience. AI tools have the power to identify what ways the learner is going demonstrate their knowledge, which in turn helps you track their progress and skills development more efficiently.

Top tips: Philippa shares her AI insights

Philippa presented the audience with her top tips on utilising AI in the best possible ways. She emphasised the importance of sharing relevant sources with AI tools, saying that you must clearly illustrate the resources you want it to use. This ensures that the results things are as accurate to your needs and actually useful. An example Philippa gave was turning a document into an online course — her advice on the initial interaction was to tell the AI what it is, in this case 'You are an expert instructional designer. Using the information attached, you will create a first draft of a course storyboard'.

Philippa reiterated to the audience that AI tools are not reliable subject matter experts. This means that you have treat them like an online assistant, providing them with reliable, verified information to get the best results possible. Her and Donald noted that where a lot of people go wrong is assuming too much knowledge on the AI's end. A big surge of upskilling the L&D industry is currently seeing is related to AI — knowing how to instruct things like ChatGPT is just as important as the AI itself.
