Learning Technologies year in review: Shaping the future of L&D

As we bid farewell to 2024, it's time to take a look back at the pivotal moments and transformative events that defined the landscape of Learning Technologies this year.

From the record-breaking conference and exhibition to prestigious awards ceremony, this year has been defined by innovation, collaboration, and a commitment to advancing workplace learning through technology.

We could not have asked for a better year to mark our 25-year milestone – and give a warm thanks to everyone in the L&D community that made it one to remember!

Learning Technologies London | 17 - 18 April: Celebrating 25 years

The Learning Technologies Conference & Exhibition celebrated 25 years at ExCeL London, marking a significant milestone in the evolution of workplace learning. The event attracted over 11,000 L&D professionals who engaged in more than 200 free seminars and explored offerings from over 200 exhibitors, showcasing the latest advancements in learning technologies.

The conference featured over 90 thought leaders, including Daniel Susskind from the University of Oxford and Thimon de Jong from WHETSTON, who delivered keynote sessions on artificial intelligence and human behaviour.

Daniel Susskind discussed the transformative impact of AI on work, emphasising the need to rethink problem-solving approaches beyond mimicking human methods. Thimon de Jong addressed the global mental health crisis, highlighting generational differences in attitudes toward the future and learning, and suggesting strategies for L&D teams to foster intergenerational collaboration.

The exhibition floor was a hub of innovation, featuring a diverse range of solutions from gamification platforms to immersive technologies. The event's success was amplified online, with our hashtag #LT24UK trending on social media, reflecting the widespread engagement and enthusiasm of participants.

Complementing the Learning Technologies exhibition was the second run of our co-located show, HR Technologies UK. HR Technologies welcomes the UK’s community of HR and recruitment leaders to discuss and deliver the tech that will shape their businesses over the coming years.

Here’s a visual recap of the event's highlights:

Learning Technologies Autumn Forum | 17, 19, 22 & 24 October: Navigating the evolving landscape

In October, the Learning Technologies Autumn Forum took centre stage. This follow-up forum explored key topics from April’s conference, with a focus on the one theme that has dominated L&D this year: how do we use emerging technologies to learn effectively at work?

The Learning Technologies Autumn Forum 2024 had 4 days of discussion, interaction and input that challenged people's thinking and prepare you for the unpredictable road that L&D faces in near future. Watch the recordings to re-live the event or see what you missed out on!

Learning Technologies Awards | 13 November: Recognising excellence and innovation

November brought the prestigious Learning Technologies Awards, a celebration of excellence in the field. The awards ceremony, held at the Park Plaza Westminster Bridge Hotel in London, recognised the outstanding contributions of individuals, organisations, and technology solutions that have made a significant impact on learning and development.

Our guests enjoyed a fabulous evening with a champagne reception, 3-course meal and live entertainment throughout the night. It provided a sophisticated and exciting space for the L&D community to network, catch up with friends and recognise all the hard work everyone has put in over the year.

Learning Technologies Awards 2024

With a new category this year, ‘Best use of AI in learning’, this year’s awards celebrated the most innovative projects and people in the industry’s most current trends. This category was introduced to celebrate inspiring accounts of how AI tools, methods, or approaches have been adopted to help organisations improve performance, deliver efficiencies, or overcome challenges. Our gold winner for this category was ServiceNow and Bongo’s project – Scaling ServiceNow's Certification Program. The judges were impressed by their masterful use of Bongo’s AI capabilities to assess both business acumen and technical skills for ServiceNow’s flagship Certification programme.

LT Webinars: Bringing the online community together

In a year that L&D has been defined by change, the Learning Technologies Webinar series gave the global community a constant platform to collaborate and discuss the evolving landscape. Sessions addressed the challenges faced by learning professionals in navigating the complexities of AI ethics, remote collaboration, and rethinking the way we design learning content.

Our webinars continue to bring together L&D professionals across the globe. We are delighted to invite you to join us in the new year when our series resumes – explore all our upcoming sessions here.
